Wrestlers Roll through Districts, with Six Winning Gold

The 2024 District 3 AA Wrestling Championships was an historical one for Delone Catholic. It’s been 14 years since the Squires captured district gold on the mats, and this year’s freshmen duo of Gavin Green (127) and Caleb Tyler (215) broke the drought with dominant performances throughout their respective brackets.

In three championship rounds during the daylong tournament at Central Dauphin East on Saturday, February 24, Green and Tyler racked up a combined 69 points while holding opponents to a combined 18. Perhaps more impressive are Green and Tyler’s overall records of 31-0 and 31-1, respectively, on the season.

“It’s just amazing to bring it to the school and the program” Tyler told the media after winning the district title in his weight class. “We’ve been working really hard, putting in extra hours during the week and it’s really showing.”

What’s also showing in AA wrestling is the continued craftmanship of the Bishop McDevitt Crusaders, who crowned three champions: Camden Baum (133), Ryan Lawler (145) and Lucas Lawler (189) and placed wrestlers on the seven-spot podium in 9 of the 12 weight classes. Having made it all the way to the semifinals in PIAA team championships two weeks prior, Bishop McDevitt ran away with the team scoring title at districts with 171.5 points, 42 ahead of second place.

Trinity was at the top of the district podium as well, as Will Detar, last year’s third-place finisher at 107 in the state finals, earned his first district gold at 114. The sophomore standout won the 113-pound title in the U.S. Marine Corps’ Greco-Roman Championships this past summer in Fargo, N.D.

The Diocese’s six gold medalists are among 19 from Diocesan high schools who will compete at the Southeast Regional in Bethlehem this weekend: Trinity’s Jordan Manyette, Noah Aubert and Anthony DeAngelo; Lancaster Catholic’s Gavin Badger and Zachary Dresch; Delone’s Nathaniel Handy and Domonic Giraffa; and Bishop McDevitt’s Braiden Lotier, Zane Crouse, Greyson Music, Liam Lawler, Easton Comp and Jaire Rawlison.

They’ll have to test their mettle among regional competition to earn a spot in the state finals, which will take place at the Giant Center in Hershey, March 7-9.
