Melodious sounds of praise and music wafted through St. Monica Church in Sunbury on Sunday morning, July 13, as Bishop Timothy Senior celebrated Holy Mass for the parishioners and blessed the parish’s new organ.
St. Monica’s is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, formed by the consolidation of St. Michael the Archangel in Sunbury and St. Thomas More in Northumberland. The church sits at the junction of the north and west branches of the Susquehanna River and was handsomely renovated in 2015 to update the original building from 1950.
In his homily for the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Bishop Senior reflected on the day’s Gospel reading of the parable of the Good Shepherd. “We can look at this parable as an illustration of how God cares for us. Wherever we are along that road, so often we can be broken ourselves, but God meets us where we are. It’s His love and mercy that comes down to who we are in our woundedness,” he said.
During the Mass, the bishop blessed the parish’s new Buch Organ. Father Jerry Kleponis, pastor, thanked parishioners for their generous donations that allowed the parish to purchase the organ with less than a year of fundraising.
