The Catholic Church commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday with the blessing of palms, the reading of the Passion and processions with palm branches.
On Palm Sunday, March 29, Witness photographer Chris Heisey captured these images of Holy Mass at St. Katharine Drexel Church in Mechanicsburg, where Father Kenneth Smith, pastor, blessed palms for the congregation. In Jesus’ time, laying palms at someone’s feet was a way of paying respect, as the crowds did for our Lord just days before his passion, death and resurrection.
