On the First Sunday of Lent, Bishop Senior Visits Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Marysville

On the first Sunday of Lent, Bishop Timothy Senior made a pastoral visit to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Marysville. Since 2018, Missionary of St. Francis DeSales Father Dijo Thomas has been the pastor of the Perry County parish as well as its mission church in Duncannon – St. Bernadette’s.

In his homily, Bishop Senior expressed his gratitude for the invitation to celebrate Holy Mass with the Marysville faithful – a prayerfully devout Catholic community that has been a strong presence in the small town since the mid-1950s.

“Lent is the Church’s spiritual retreat for us until Easter,” Bishop Senior said. “When we ‘give up’ in Lent, we are giving up ourselves and making much more room for God – we become more available to Him when we give up. Lent is like our project, and we have our own ideas about what our plans are for Lent. But really, Lent is God’s project working on us.”

Bishop Senior stressed that with God’s help we can all overcome sin. “Jesus came to set us free from sin, but we need to create the space for Jesus…. When we do, He will speak to our spirits which are prisms into our hearts…. The rainbow in the sky is the reminder that God is always there for us in the storms of life.”

Father Thomas leads a deeply spiritually moving Stations of the Cross hike up Hawk Rock in Duncannon, an effort begun last year which has become a traditional event in which all the faithful are welcome. This year’s mountain journey is on Friday, March 22. After the mile hike, Father Thomas celebrates Holy Mass on the mountain’s peak, which overlooks the rich farmland valley of Perry County along the Susquehanna River.
