Office of Life and Dignity Observes Earth Day by Planting Trees at Resurrection Cemetery

Azure blue skies, lush green grass and a cool breeze on Earth Day offered the ideal setting for volunteers planting trees at Resurrection Cemetery in Harrisburg on April 22.

The landscaping project was hosted by the Diocesan Office for Life and Dignity and invited volunteers to join in bringing symbols of new life to the freshly-landscaped area near the cemetery’s new columbarium.

Marianne Weltmer, Director of the Office for Life and Dignity, worked with Tyler Shanabrook, Diocesan Cemetery Manager, to coordinate the effort and encourage volunteer collaboration with the cemetery.

Weltmer was joined by co-workers Deacon Gregory Amarante, Secretary for Catholic Life and Evangelization, and Zachary Haney, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, and a few local parishioners. The group planted dogwoods and maple trees throughout the morning.

As part of its Care for Creation ministry, the Office for Life and Dignity will host a cemetery grounds clean-up at Holy Cross and Mount Calvary cemeteries on Monday, May 20 in observance of Laudato Si’ Week. Watch the Diocesan website at www.hbgdiocese.org for upcoming information, or contact Marianne Weltmer at mweltmer@hbgdiocese.org or 717-657-4804 ext. 322.
