Sister Susan Marie Hazenski, SS.C.M., died on November 8 at Maria Hall in Danville. She was 67.
Born in Pittston Pa., on September 7, 1958, she was the daughter of Joseph Hazenski and Grace Emma. She attended St John the Baptist Elementary School in Pittston and graduated from St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston. Sister Susan Marie studied at Lackawanna Junior College in Scranton and received an associate degree in Medical Secretarial Science and worked for several years as a medical secretary. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius on November 1, 1985, and professed her final vows on July 31, 1993. She received a BA from Kings College in Wilkes Barre, a Masters in Education from Marywood University and a Masters in Theology from Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio.
Sister Susan Marie served as a teacher at St. Simon School in Chicago and St. Columba School in Bloomsburg, and as principal at St. Joseph School in Hazleton and St Joseph School in Columbia, S.C. Sister Susan Marie then served on staff and as manager of the retreat center at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio from 2007-2019. In 2019, she came to Danville where she served as Finance Office Assistant, Clerical Assistant for the St. Cyril Retreat Center, and baker.
Sister Susan Marie battled multiple cancers during her final years. She is survived by her sister, Mary Grace Kabacinski of Wilkes-Barre, a nephew, two grandnieces and a grandnephew.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on November 13 at Maria Hall in Danville, followed by burial in the Sisters’ cemetery.
