Sister Anna Louise Aherne, (formerly Sister William Anne) OSF, 91, died in Assisi House in Aston, Pa., on June 14. She had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 72 years.
Sister Anna Louise was born in Cobh, Ireland. She entered the congregation in 1946 and professed her first vows in 1950. She earned her bachelor’s degree in history from Our Lady of Angels (Neumann University) and ministered primarily in elementary education and prayer ministry.
Sister Anna Louise served for 20 years in the Diocese of Trenton, 44 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and several years in the Dioceses of Harrisburg and Allentown. In the Diocese of Harrisburg, she taught for three years at St. Joseph School in Dallastown.
In 2014-2016, she returned to Ireland, serving as a caregiver for a family member.
Sister Anna Louise served in local house ministry and prayer ministry at Our Lady of Angels Convent. Since 2016, she served in prayer and hospitality ministry in Assisi House, where she lived at the time of her death.
All services were held in Assisi House on June 17. Burial was in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery in Aston.
Sister Anna Louise is survived by her nephew, Roory (Tonia) Aherne, additional nephews and nieces, and her Franciscan family. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.
