Father Paul R. Shuda, 88, of Harrisburg, died Monday, March 20, 2023, in UPMC – Harrisburg Hospital.
Father Shuda was born in Mount Carmel on June 11, 1934, the son of the late Joseph L. Shuda and Martha E. Nalis Shuda and was preceded in death by his sister, Sister Mary Michelle Shuda and his brother, Father Robert J. Shuda. He is survived by beloved cousins and friends.
He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Divinity from St. Vincent’s Seminary. Father Shuda was a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 67 years and was a member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Council 15137.
He was ordained to the priesthood on May 14, 1960, in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Harrisburg. His priestly assignments included: Parochial Vicar, St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus Parish, New Cumberland, 1960-1962; Teacher, York Catholic High School in York, 1962-1963; Parochial Vicar, St. Andrew Parish in Waynesboro, 1963-1964; Parochial Vicar, St. Patrick Parish in Carlisle, 1964-1966; Administrator, Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Hanover, 1966; Parochial Vicar, St. Catherine Laboure Parish in Harrisburg, 1966-1968; Parochial Vicar, St. Joan of Arc Parish in Hershey, 1968-1969; Parochial Vicar, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Lancaster, 1969-1974; Administrator, St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Harrisburg, 1974-1978; Pastor, St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 1978-1982; Pastor, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Kulpmont, 1982-1995; Dean – Vicar Forane, Northumberland Deanery, 1984-1997; Pastor, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Kulpmont, 1988-1990; Spiritual Moderator, Legion of Mary, 1989-1995; In residence at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Kulpmont, 1995; Pastor, Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament and the Vietnamese Martyrs in Harrisburg, 1995-2007.
Vigil for Deceased with a Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated Sunday, March 26, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. in Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Parish and the Vietnamese Martyrs, 2121 North 3rd Street, Harrisburg, with Very Rev. William Forrey, Celebrant. A viewing will be held on Monday, March 27, 2023, from 10-10:45 a.m. in the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. with Most Rev. Ronald W. Gainer, DD, JCL, Bishop of Harrisburg, as Celebrant. Burial will be on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at 11 a.m. in Our Mother of Consolation Cemetery, Mount Carmel.
