Deacon Francis C. Gorman, 87, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., passed away on July 19, 2022. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late John H. Gorman and Sarah Gorman (Cullen). He was the youngest of two children. He graduated from Harrisburg Catholic High School in 1956 where he was captain of the basketball team and an all-star quarterback.
Fran was married to Alice (Marshall) for 66 years after initially meeting her in third grade. They were inseparable and had a love that endured over the decades. Fran worked for 32 years at John Hancock Insurance where he was a Certified Financial Planner. He later joined the Pastoral Care department at Holy Spirit Hospital, retiring in 2018 after serving the hospital community for 20 years. Deeply devoted to his Catholic faith, Fran was ordained as a Permanent Deacon in 1978, actively serving at Good Shepherd Church for over 44 years. He was known for his thought-provoking homilies, jokes, and stories. He taught Hospital Ministry at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, Md., for 18 years.
Fran lived his life in service to others. He was a beloved Pop to six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He and Alice spent many summers traveling to Hilton Head Island, S.C., taking the entire family on vacation. It was something that he loved to do and frequently reflected upon.
Fran is survived by his beloved wife, Alice Gorman (nee Marshall) and daughters Kathleen Hull (Nick) and Gheri McAllister, his brother John H. Gorman and wife Margaret, and many nephews and nieces. The family would like to say a special thanks to Kathleen and granddaughter Kirsten for their loving nursing care during his long illness.
