Mid-Season Heartbreak Poses Challenges for Shamrocks

Last season, the Shamrocks of Trinity High School won a District 3 Class 2A championship in convincing fashion in November and then proceeded to march into December where they lost in the PIAA state semifinal to the eventual state champion Southern Columbia – their ninth football state championship.

This season, after a difficult loss to perennially playoff-worthy Wyomissing, in which a multiple score lead was squandered, Trinity faced Capital Division foe West Perry at COBO field on a beautiful September 15. The match-up between these two rivals lived up to the hype, as Trinity exchanged lead changes in what amounted to a defensive struggle.

When West Perry put together a masterful nine-minute drive in the fourth quarter to take a 19-16 lead with some 90 seconds left in the game, those of the betting type would not have given the ’Rocks much of a chance. But good field position after a meager kickoff and a 15-yard roughing-the-passer call put Trinity in business deep in Mustang territory. With only eight seconds left, Trinity had a fourth and one on the goal line, but after a Mustangs’ timeout, the ’Rocks ran a peculiar rollout pass option that was sniffed out by West Perry and a feeble toss to the endzone fell harmlessly to the turf.

How the ’Rocks respond to back-to-back September losses will determine their December playoff fortunes.
