While being the number one seed in any tournament is a tribute to your prowess in competing, it also comes with a price: you have a target on your back and your opponents play with fearless abandon to topple you off your perch.
Defending District 3 Class 2A singles champion Anna Millen of Lancaster Catholic captured her second straight District 3 singles championship at Hershey Racquet Club on Oct. 16 with an easy straight set victory, 6-1, 6-0, to parlay that top seed into another gold medal.
Millen had to beat three players from Berks County schools to win, and in her first match she dropped set one in a tie breaker to Kutztown’s Sierra Smart. From there, Millen had to win a second set tiebreaker to avoid being upset in straight sets.
Millen advances to compete in the PIAA state tournament, which will also be played in Hershey next weekend, Nov. 5-7.
