Four Land on Medals Stand in State Track and Field

Exceeding her District 3 championship throw by some 14 feet, Lancaster Catholic’s Margaret Bila etched her name into the PIAA State Track and Field history books with a gold-medal discus toss of 140’6” during the competition over Memorial Day weekend.

Her performance at states was also a personal best by more than six feet for the Crusader junior, who now is also sixth among discus throwers in Lancaster-Lebanon League history.

“I put in a lot of work this season in trying to better my distances,” Bila told the media after she stepped off the top of the medals stand at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium. “I’m going to work more this summer, no days off, to try to get 150 next year, maybe even higher.”

Olivia Kopitsky of Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School in Coal Township joined Bila in the Class 2A discus throw, placing eighth overall. The rising senior, who competes for Mount Carmel Area in a co-op program, also placed eighth in the shotput.

Elsewhere in girls’ 2A competition, Trinity’s Adeline Woodward, a silver medalist in the District 3 pole vault the week before, elevated herself to an 11-foot jump to place sixth in the state.

Woodward’s Shamrock teammate, Jeremiah Hargrove, scored a medal for his performance in the javelin, with a throw of 188’10.” That distance soared past his District 3 silver medal performance by some 17 feet to earn fourth place in the state.
