On the Feast of St. Jerome, September 30, Bishop Timothy Senior visited and celebrated Holy Mass for some 40 residents, staff and volunteers at the Ecumenical Retirement Center, located just a few miles from the Diocesan Center in Harrisburg.
Bishop Senior spoke to the ministry of St. Jerome (Hieronymus) in the fourth and fifth centuries: “If you are Scripture ignorant,” St. Jerome said, “then you are Christ ignorant.” St. Jerome translated the early texts of the Bible into Latin.
“Who here today has not gone through tough times – and may be now – who has not relied heavily on their faith to sustain you?” Bishop Senior said in his homily. “Our faith gets tested and that’s where trust in Jesus is so important…. Jesus is saying to us all, trust me, I will bring out a greater joy in your troubles, just like he did for Job who lost everything.”
Father Kevin Coyle, pastor of St. Catherine Labouré Parish in Harrisburg, concelebrated the Mass and ministers to the residents at the home. After Mass, Bishop Senior shared fellowship time with residents, who each gave him thanks for the visit.
