Diocesan Swimmers Excel at District 3 Swimming Championships

First events at the District 3 Class 2A boys’ swimming championships at Cumberland Valley High School’s Natatorium determined who was going stand upon the winner’s podium the most in the two-day meet on March 1 and 2. The meet features 11 races in all and brings more than 300 swimmers and 40 schools to the competition.

Trinity’s 200-yard medley foursome won the opening relay by less than half a second to bolster their team standing. James Gaudion, Josiah Garber, Max Jones and Timmy Garber won the gold medal to begin things, but it was the defending District 3 champ Crusaders of Bishop McDevitt who soon after began acing races.

McDevitt’s RJ Duffy won the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breaststroke; Isaac Hancock dominated in the 50 and 100 freestyle races; and strong showings in the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays (RJ Duffy, Ian Shyk, Bradley Warner, Isaac Hancock) helped propel the Crusaders to another district team championship, edging Schuylkill Valley by a team score of 216-211. Teams get 40 points for a win, 34 for second place and 32 for third.

The 2024 swim season has been a great one too for the Bishop McDevitt girls’ team, as they won their first ever Mid-Penn Division crown in undefeated fashion. At the District 3 meet, the Crusaders’ Emma Duffy captured a silver medal in the 100-yard Breaststroke to help McDevitt place fifth in the team standings. The lone gold medal winner for Diocesan swimmers was Lancaster Catholic’s Addie Elliott, who blew away her rivals by nearly two seconds in the 100-Yard Backstroke. Trinity’s Madelyn Blough captured two silver medals in the 100 Butterfly and the 200 Freestyle races.

The PIAA state championships will be March 13-16 at Bucknell University.
