A 30th anniversary Mass for Sister Mary Catherine Rose Giacobbe, the first hermit Sister in the Diocese, will be celebrated Aug. 14 at 9 a.m. at St. Lawrence Chapel in Harrisburg. Bishop Ronald Gainer will be celebrant for the Pontifical High Mass, and Sister will renew her vows. St. Pius X Church in Selinsgrove’s Parish Mission, Aug. 16-18 at 7 p.m. with Father Bill Garrott, O.P., as the preacher. The theme for this time of spiritual renewal is “iMercy: The Divine Hotspot.”

A Mass to honor first responders and health care workers will be hosted by the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Honor Guard of St. Joseph Parish in York, on Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. at St. Joseph Church. Active and retired police officers, firefighters, EMTs, nurses and doctors will be honored at the Mass.

Education & Enrichment

Struggling with the loss and sadness of separation or divorce? “Surviving Divorce” will be offered in the Divine Mercy Room at St. Margaret Mary Parish in Harrisburg, on Mondays beginning Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. “Surviving Divorce” is a 12-week program created to bring hope and healing to those who have experienced the pain and loneliness of a broken marriage. It is for the newly separated and divorced and those still struggling with issues many years later. It will help answer your questions, restore hope, and begin authentic healing. The Diocesan Committee on Scouting will offer a Girl Scout patch workshop on July 31 at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Hershey from 2-4:30 p.m., with Mass at 5:00. Girl Scouts are invited to an afternoon of outdoor activities to learn about the life of St. Joan of Arc, participate in a scavenger hunt and complete a service project for veterans (please bring a new pair of men’s white socks). The Diocesan Office of Ministry with People with Disabilities is hosting a no-cost virtual workshop, Navigating the World of the Family with Special Needs, on Saturday August 28 from 10 a.m.-noon, via Zoom. This educational workshop is intended to help parents and caregivers address the question, “What is the key to special needs planning?” Topics include financial/estate planning, special needs trusts, guardianship, wills and letter of intent. Volunteers needed for the Diocesan Summer Camp for Adults with Developmental Disabilities, Aug. 15-20, 2021, at Camp Kirchenwald in Lebanon County. The camp serves approximately 30 adults campers, with activities including swimming, hiking, fishing, canoeing, arts and crafts, and overnight stays in cabins. Adult females who are able to stay overnight are particularly needed this year. All volunteers are required to complete the Diocesan Clearance process and to provide proof of full vaccination from the COVID-19 virus (vaccination waivers may be granted). Attendance at a brief training session prior to helping at camp is also required. There is no cost to volunteers; all meals, events, campground activities, etc. are included. The Annual Pilgrimage in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary: A Day of Prayer for World Peace through Conversion will be celebrated at the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, Emmitsburg, Md., Aug. 5, starting at 10 a.m. with the Sacrament of Reconciliation outside the chapel and time for the Rosary and prayer, followed by lunch. Following lunch, pilgrims are invited to ascend the mountain to the Grotto along the Via Crucis, or along Rosary Lane, and to fill a container with natural spring water from taps around “Our Lady’s Pool.” The Priests will bless the water after Mass. At 1 p.m., the Pilgrims’ Holy Mass at the Grotto of the Lourdes Cave begins. Father Michael Reid, pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Hanover, will preside. A period of Adoration begins at 2:30 p.m. and Father John Hoke, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Milton, will offer a Eucharistic reflection. A Beginning Experience Weekend for those suffering the loss of a spouse through death, divorce or separation will be hosted by the Diocesan Beginning Experience Team at Camp Kirchenwald Nov. 12-14, 2021. The ecumenical Beginning Experience weekends are an approved program of the Church. Hundreds of persons have been helped to move towards successful, productive, happy lives by attending one of these weekends. The weekend is led by persons who have lost a spouse through death or divorce and are trained in facilitating a weekend. Each Beginning Experience Team is certified by the International Beginning Experience Organization. Beginning Experience is under the auspices of the Diocesan Office of Catholic Life and Evangelization. It is your Church at work to provide help, healing and spiritual restoration. Catholic Charities’ Interfaith Shelter Golf Classic, Sept. 20 at Colonial Country Club in Harrisburg. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. with golf beginning at 1 p.m. The day includes a registration gift, a boxed lunch, practice area and putting green, 18 holes of golf (scramble format) with cart, and a buffet dinner after golf. Various team and skill prizes available as well as a fantastic sports memorabilia auction and other door prizes. Golfers of all skills and abilities are welcome. Seven Sorrows BVM Parish in Middletown will have its summer festival Aug. 19 – 21, rain or shine, on the parish grounds from 5-9 p.m. nightly, including a flea market, cash raffle, basket raffle, and games for all ages. Thursday features a car show, DJ Joe T, and food truck vendors Sittin’ Pickin’ Chickin’, The Lucky Penny Burger Co., Taste of Italy, Grappling Crab Shack, and 717 Tacos. Full-time position available in cemetery maintenance and service at Holy Saviour Cemetery in York. Applicants must have skills in grounds maintenance. St. Patrick Parish in Carlisle is seeking a full-time parish youth ministry leader responsible for implementing a program of comprehensive youth ministry using programs from LifeTeen and Edge, but not limited to them.
