Masses and Prayer Services

All university students are invited to join Bishop Timothy Senior for a Holy Hour at St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg on January 27. Come start your semester in the presence of our Lord. Lunch along with a Q&A with the bishop will follow the Holy Hour. St. Joan of Arc Church in Hershey will host a Holy Hour of Grace, Friday, December 8 for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. There will be a Holy Hour from noon-1 p.m. in the church. After the 7 p.m. evening Mass, there will be an evening Holy Hour to pray for the end of abortion with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

The Epiphany Italian Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg on Sunday, January 7 at 12:15 p.m. Father Joshua Brommer will be the celebrant. Caelorum at St. Joan of Arc Church in Hershey will be held Wednesday, December 13 at 7 p.m. Father Kevin Key will preside, and a reception will follow. St. Joan of Arc Parish in Hershey will hold a quarterly Mass for persons with sensory sensitivity or other disabilities. Dimmer lighting, no music, a shorter homily and other adaptations are included to promote a fully inclusive environment. Every effort will be made to accommodate all in attendance, and all behaviors are welcome. The next sensory-friendly Mass is scheduled for Sunday, December 17 at 2 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring materials that can assist with comfort during the liturgy (i.e., noise-cancelling headphones, wiggle seats, weighted blankets, fidgets, etc.) For more information, please contact the Parish Office at 717-533-7168 or Office@stjoanhershey.org. An ecumenical, inter-religious candlelight remembrance service for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one, family member, or friend to suicide will be held on Sunday, December 10, at 6:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Basilica, Conewago. It does not matter when the suicide occurred. The remembrance service is a time for all to come together to let you know you are not alone.

Education & Enrichment

“Keeping Christ in Christmas,” an event featuring a dramatization of Las Posadas, will take place at St. Joseph Parish in Hanover, December 21 from 6-8 p.m. Las Posadas consists of songs and prayers which form the Novena leading up to Christmas. In this bilingual celebration, Father Michael Rothan and students from St. Joseph School will perform a dramatization of Las Posadas, followed by Advent and Christmas music in English. The Knights of Columbus Spanish Council will provide traditional Advent food.

A presentation on Our Lady of Guadalupe, “The Eagle Woman, The New Eve,” will be presented by Maria Mullen, Saturday, December 9 at St. Joseph Church in York. Mass will be celebrated at 8 a.m., followed by the Rosary at 8:30 a.m., refreshments and the presentation at 9 a.m. For information, contact the parish at 717-755-7503.

Save the date for the HDCCW’s 98th annual convention, April 6, 2024. The Harrisburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women invites all women of the Diocese to hold the date for the 98th annual convention. Our theme this year is “Be Still & Listen.” The convention will take place Saturday, April 6, 2024, with registration and continental breakfast beginning at 8 a.m. at the Diocesan Center in Harrisburg. Annie McHugh will be our keynote speaker. Please watch The Witness for additional details in the near future.

St. Jimmy’s Jamboree Playgroup at St. James Parish in Lititz will meet on alternating Thursdays and Fridays this school year from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The group will also be offering Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) for children ages 3-6 during St. Jimmy’s Jamboree when it falls on a Thursday. The Mental Health Ministry at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Mechanicsburg is offering two types of spiritual support groups: a group for individuals who are experiencing mental illness, and a group for family members and friends of those experiencing mental illness. Meetings are now being held on the second and fourth Wednesday evenings of each month. We will gather in the Bayley Conference Room for open discussion, and then move to separate locations for the Spiritual Support Group meetings. Events & Fundraisers

Instruments and voices come together at York Catholic’s Christmas Concerts.  The high school concert is Sunday, December 17, at 2 p.m. and features the Concert Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Bands and Brass Choir. The middle school concert is Monday, December 18, at 7 p.m. and features the Chorus and Band. Celebrate the season and enjoy the sounds of the holiday spirit! Admission is free.

Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Middletown is presenting a live Nativity on the parish grounds on Friday, December 8 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the church parking lot. Guests will be guided by the three Wise Men as they visit the Bethlehem innkeeper, shepherds, live animals, and the Holy Family. Guests will be entertained with Christmas music performed by the band Forgiven, enter a Scripture Walk, and receive a free chance to win a set of five stuffed Nativity animals. The Children’s Nook will keep little ones busy coloring The Little Star story. Children may also pet the live animals, which include bunnies, sheep, goats, a donkey and a llama. After visiting the manger, guests are invited to stop by the fire pit for a complimentary s’more (while supplies last), visit the Bethlehem tents, and purchase a star-shaped soft pretzel or hot chocolate (also while supplies last). Guests are also invited to visit the church and share prayer requests, which can be hung on the tree or placed in the prayer request box. Seven Sorrows parishioners will pray for attendees and their requests throughout the days leading to Christmas. Parking is free and available in the school lots. The Knights of Columbus and The Christopher Club of Mount Carmel will host the annual Blessing of the Manager on Saturday, December 9 at 7:15 p.m. This is a community event with local Catholic priests and pastors of the Mount Carmel Ministerium participating. Fellowship and caroling with complimentary holiday food, snacks and cookies will be provided. Stop by and see the spectacular decorations designed and created by Sir Knight Michael White and get into the holiday spirit while keeping Christ in Christmas.

St. Ann Byzantine Catholic Church in Harrisburg will be selling homemade nut rolls, perohi and smoked kielbasa in the parish hall on Saturday, December 9 from 9 a.m. to noon. The homemade nut, apricot and poppy seed rolls will be sold for $12. The perohi are sold frozen by the dozen. Flavors are, potato & cheese, cabbage, sauerkraut and prune. Farmer cheese perohi are 10 per bag. The perohi are $7 per bag and the kielbasa is $8. Cash, personal checks with ID and most credit cards are welcome. No orders will be taken; sale is on a first come, first served basis.

Knights of Columbus Council #3625 of Prince of Peace Parish in Steelton are sponsoring an All You Can Eat Breakfast on Sunday, December 10, from 9 a.m.-noon. The menu consists of eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, muffins, coffee and juice for $10. Children 6-12 are $7 and children 5 and under are free. The breakfast is being held in our Parish Center. Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Parish in Elysburg will have its annual Christmas Bazaar, December 9 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., featuring crafters, vendors, raffles, a cookie walk, delicious foods and baked goods. A few vendor spots are still available.

The Auscultation Brass Band will perform a Christmas Concert at St. John Neumann Church in Lancaster on Tuesday evening, December 12 at 7 p.m., to benefit the Knights of Columbus via a free will offering. The Auscultation Band was formed in Lancaster in 1985 and consists of a variety of physicians from numerous specialties who have kept the playing of music as a large part of their lives. The all-physician band practices weekly and performs numerous concerts, charity benefits, retirement communities, local churches, and medical events. Their repertoire of music includes classical, jazz, and popular brass ensemble.

Lancaster Court Queen of Peace #1023 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas invites youth in grades 4-12 from all schools – public, private, parochial, home, and cyber – to enter the 2023 National Education Contest. Categories and divisions are: Division 1 for grades 4-5 in essay, poetry, art and computer art; Division 2 for grades 6-8 in essay, poetry, art, computer art, music and photography; and Division 3 for grades 9-12 in essay, poetry, art, computer art, music and photography. Students may submit entries in each category for their respective division. They must submit an entry form with each entry. Contest themes are “God’s love and kindness will shine upon us like the sun that rises in the sky, Luke 1:78” and “How does my love shine for others?” Contest forms are available at http://www.catholicdaughters.org/. Select Activities, then 2023-2024 contests, and then click on Education Contest. Entries must be postmarked or delivered by February 1, 2024, to the local Education Contest Chairperson, Robin Burgoon, 125 Petersburg Rd., Lancaster, PA 17601. All first-place local winners will be entered in the state education contest, and first-place state winners will be entered at the national level. An awards ceremony for local winners will be planned for late May/early June 2024.

Deanery craft night is back at St. James Parish in Lititz. Join us the second Monday of every month beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Room 102 for crafts at St. James Catholic Church of Lititz. Come prepared to have fun and use your creativity! If you are an individual age 15 or older with an intellectual or developmental disability or autism, you are welcome to join us. The Diocese of Harrisburg has a full-time job opening for cemetery and maintenance service at Holy Saviour Cemetery in York. Applicants must have skills in grounds maintenance. The ability to operate a backhoe is highly desirable but training will be given. Other equipment that will be used: tractor, pickup, mowers and a variety of small equipment related to cemetery maintenance and operation. Must be a good team player who is able to take direction and demonstrate tact, courtesy and diplomacy. Applicant must have valid clean PA driver’s license. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
