Delone Finishes Softball Season with Silver at Districts

In the tightly contested District 3 Class 2A softball final between the Squirettes of Delone Catholic and the Bullets of Brandywine Heights May 28 at Millersville University’s Seaber Stadium, both teams’ seasons were at stake, with only the winner moving on to the PIAA state championships.

In a low scoring nail-biter, Coach Matt Rickrode’s Squirettes fell to the Bullets, 2-0, signaling the end of a season and the conclusion of a high school softball career for five seniors. It was Delone’s first trip to the district championship game since 2019.

Scoreless into the fourth inning, Brandywine put up their first run against the stellar throwing arm of Delone’s Emma Wilson as Bullet pitcher Eloyse Stufflet smacked a double and registered an RBI.

Wilson, who pitched 15 strikeouts on the night, retired the next two batters to stop the Bullets’ momentum. The Rosemont College-bound rightie would finish the game with no walks and three hits on 101 pitches.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Squirettes had a chance to tie or take the lead with two runners on base and no outs, after Adyson Hummer and Teagan Funkhouser reached first base on an error and a bunt, respectively.

But Delone’s next three hitters grounded out to shortstop, stifling their challenge for a comeback.

The Bullets scored an insurance run in the seventh to secure their fifth title in the past 11 seasons. Delone, making its sixth appearance in the district finals, took the silver medal to add to its two previous golds for the program; its most recent was in 2015.

To punch its ticket to the finals, Delone scored an 8-1 win over Fairfield in the semis, marking the seniors’ first trip to the championship game.
