Crusading for a Cure: Bishop McDevitt’s miniTHON Raises more than $71,000 ‘For the Kids’

In tandem with the renowned event at Penn State University that annually raises millions of dollars for childhood cancer research, 243 students at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg danced the night away in their own miniTHON February 22. In their first THON effort since 2019, the student-led endeavor raised $71,760.14 to benefit Four Diamonds families battling pediatric cancer.

The participants stayed on their feet for 12 consecutive hours and were joined during the event by Bishop Timothy Senior, who stopped by to encourage students in their efforts. Four Diamonds families from the McDevitt community – including the Marsico, Brixius and Mehalick families – also spoke to the crowd about the realities of battling the horrific disease and THON’s incredible support.

A new event this year was the introduction of a Luminary walk through the school chapel, where all students, volunteers and attendees could hear the names of those who have battled, are battling or have lost their battle to cancer read over the loudspeaker. The chapel was lined with luminary bags listing the names of those honored.

At Bishop McDevitt, miniTHON is a student-led project, and was co-chaired this year by Danny Formica and Elizabeth Crawford. The student committee secured decorations, food, entertainment, registration and fundraising for the event. Faculty members got in on the action too – agreeing to shave their heads, debate students and be taped to the bleachers as part of creative fundraising efforts.
