HARRISBURG, Pa. – Today, the Most Reverend Timothy C. Senior, Bishop of Harrisburg, released the following message in honor of Juneteenth:
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
It was 160 years ago, on June 19, 1865, when the last of the enslaved people in the Confederate states learned of their freedom. Juneteenth ended slavery in our country, sadly, it did not eliminate the evil of racism.
In the Gospel of Mark, we are called to “love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:31) This commandment transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity, and background. It challenges us to embrace one another with open hearts, to see the inherent God-given dignity and radical equality in every individual, and to work tirelessly against the forces of racism and hatred that seek to divide us.
Juneteenth calls us to confront uncomfortable truths about our history while also acknowledging the ongoing impact of systemic racism in our society. As Pope Leo expressed it: “In this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalizes the poorest (Homily for the Beginning of the Pontificate, May 18, 2025).” We must challenge ourselves to listen—to truly listen—to the voices and experiences of those who have been marginalized. By doing so, we deepen our capacity for empathy and understanding, essential tools for building bridges of reconciliation.
As we observe Juneteenth, may we carry forward the spirit of love and liberation in our hearts. May we all be united in our commitment to end all forms of racism and hatred. Together, we can create a world where every person is honored, valued, and free.
