Bishop Senior is Surprise Pianist for McDevitt Spring Concert

Among family, friends and classmates gathered on a rainy May 14, Bishop Timothy Senior was a surprise, guest pianist at the Bishop McDevitt High School spring concert, “A Celebration of “His Amazing Grace” Through Music.”

The concert featured the Bishop McDevitt Jazz Ensemble, who, under the direction of Nathaniel Miscannon, Director of Instrumental Activities for Partner Schools, performed “Our Love is Here To Stay,” “Blue Moon” and “That’s Life” among other pieces. Following the Ensemble, the 6th-8th grade Combined Band presented a stirring performance of the “Theme from Mission Impossible.” The students in this band come from the Catholic elementary schools in the surrounding area.

The McDevitt Concert Band, directed by Susan Crane, Director of Instrumental Ensembles, offered their renditions of “The Lion King Medley,” “Rhythm of The Winds” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” after the brief intermission. The “Phantom of the Opera” and “Amazing Grace” followed by the McDevitt Honors Chamber Ensemble, before Bishop Senior joined the students for “Rhapsody in Blue.”

Before giving a moving performance, Bishop Senior offered words of thanks for the invitation, adding events like the concert are a chance for students to showcase their many talents.

The bishop added the concert also provided “a glimpse into the mission and purpose of Catholic education, to develop virtues. And there are two virtues that come to mind. The importance of sacrifice and of working hard, and having something beautiful come about as a result of that. And the other is the importance of working together as part of a community…. When we work together, each of us giving of ourselves and our talents, something beautiful happens.”
