Marina Eshelman and Cayden McDonnell, both from Bishop McDevitt, smile after winning their respective District 3 Class 2A Diving championships. They will now compete in the PIAA state championships in mid-March.Never is it easy to repeat as a district champion, but Bishop McDevitt’s Cayden McDonnell, junior, did just that in dominating fashion to win the District 3 Class 2A Diving championship at Dover High School on February 21. To make the victory even sweeter, his teammate, junior Marina Eshelman, won the Girls 2A competition. Both will compete at the PIAA state championships at Bucknell University in mid-March.
McDonnell, after a disappointing second dive, rose to the occasion and nailed his remaining dives to convincingly win the gold medal by nearly 100 points (405 to 310). Eshelman, who did not have the Mid-Penn tournament that she hoped for, won by 22 points over her closest competition.
“We have never been to states together. This will be our first year together as teammates, so I am very excited,” McDonnell told the press afterwards.
“It’ll be really fun and be cool to see what happens [at states],” Eshelman said.
