At St. Margaret Mary, Catholic Schools Week Highlighted by Mass with Bishop

Aaron Lynch, fifth from left, and fellow seminarians from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia meet with Pope Francis after a Wednesday Audience in January.

Catholic Schools Week is a spirited time for students, and the celebration was heightened even more so for students at St. Margaret Mary School in Harrisburg, who welcomed Bishop Ronald Gainer on Jan. 29.
The bishop celebrated Mass in the school gym, and visited classrooms to interact with the students enrolled in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
Students demonstrated their gifts during the Mass as altar servers, lectors and members of the choir. Members of the school’s pro-life club, begun in 1994, joined their grandmother and club founder Connie Fenice in presenting the gifts.
Principal Mary Jo Pronio expressed gratitude for the bishop’s visit, saying, “Whenever we have a guest priest celebrate Mass for us, we share our gratitude for them. We’re so grateful to have the bishop join us, and to show the students his wonderful support of Catholic education and his investment in it. That’s what helps make our Catholic schools so great.”
St. Margaret Mary School is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Activities have included an annual fall bash and a walk-through history. During Catholic Schools Week, alumni visited students to share how their faith has helped them in their lives, and to talk about their memories of the school and pass on the school’s spirit.
This year, the school implemented the Second Step social and emotional learning program, with before and after school sessions that develop students’ social, intellectual, emotional, and physical dimensions.
STREAM activities are integrated throughout the curriculum, and include a new coding and robotics program for grades 6-8. Students competed in the Central Pennsylvania Robotics Competition, and have participated in the Science Explorers program for the past four years.
“St. Margaret Mary School integrates all the different aspects of knowledge through the subjects taught in the light of the gospel and – in the words of our alumni – teaching values for a lifetime,” Pronio said.
