At Our Lady of the Angels School, ‘Apostles Assemble’ to Welcome Bishop

Bishop Ronald Gainer visits third-graders at Our Lady of the Angels School.

Challenging and supporting students to do good works for the benefit of others, Our Lady of the Angels School in Columbia has adopted the theme, “Apostles Assemble” this school year.
Stemming from the popular Marvel and DC comics, the “Apostles Assemble” motto is a motivator for students to contribute and volunteer, complete with student t-shirts and a logo.
During Catholic Schools Week, students at Our Lady of the Angels demonstrated their service-mindedness during a visit from Bishop Ronald Gainer. Students participated as altar servers, contributed in song with the choir, and served as gift bearers as they welcomed the Diocese’s chief teacher for Mass and classroom visits on Jan. 27.
“We challenge the students to focus on doing good works, just as the apostles did. We tell them that they have super powers that God gave them to help others,” said Our Lady of the Angels’ principal, Amanda Young.
Answering the call to service, students can contribute to the Missions in order to wear their “Apostles Assemble” shirt to school, and they participate monthly in different projects that serve the Columbia area.
This year, the students have collected items for a dental drive, a canned food drive, Christmas gifts for children in need and self-care products for a pro-life ministry. They have also participated in a Rosary Club, a Mission Rosary prayer service and Eucharistic Adoration, and thanked first responders and community leaders with a special luncheon.
The school’s theme this year is based on its five virtues of reverence, responsibility, cooperation, respect and kindness, Young said.
