Annual Baby Shower Supports Moms and Newborns at Women’s Care Center of York

An annual baby shower hosted by the Harrisburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women shined a light on the Church’s support of both women and babies, raised awareness for one local pro-life pregnancy center, and collected a bevy of donations to help moms care for their newborns.

Hosted at the Diocesan Center in Harrisburg on Saturday, January 27, the event featured traditional baby shower games, food and fellowship as attendees donated a multitude of infant clothing, toys, personal care items and diapers. This year’s collection was presented to the Women’s Care Center of York, whose outreach director, Ciara Darr, offered an impactful presentation about the center’s critical and caring work that focuses as much on women as it does on their babies.

Last year, women made 2,321 in-person visits to Women’s Care Center of York, and 432 babies were born to mothers who benefitted from the center and its free ultrasounds, parenting classes, budgeting sessions and its newest series, “Raising Kids with Character.”

“One in five babies born in York County now start with a Women’s Care Center,” Darr said, underscoring that the ministry is focused first and foremost on love.

“We don’t stop when the baby is born; in fact, that’s when our work really begins in helping moms and dads become successful parents,” Darr remarked.

The baby shower is an annual, pro-life outreach of the Harrisburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women.

“We held our first baby shower in 2018. Since that time, we have supported eight different pro-life organizations in our Diocese with wonderful donations from these annual baby showers. Most years, the baby showers are held after nine months of praying for babies in danger of abortion through our Spiritual Adoption Programs,” said Alycia Laureti, the council’s immediate past president.

“In an effort to reach small, underserved pro-life organizations, we ask Parish Councils of Catholic Women from different geographic areas in our Diocese who their council and/or their parish supports. The receiving organizations are overwhelmed and most grateful for the generous donations, and it is a beautiful way to share our Catholic giving spirit with others who are promoting the pro-life mission,” she said.
